Sandalwood is the slowest fragrance in India's scent heritage. Santalum album doesn't smell of anything for its first decade - the scent lives only in heartwood the tree takes decades to build. It has perfumed temples, sandal paste, attars and marriage rites for centuries, and it is the creamy, milky, almost lactic quality of that wood - not a sharp cedar sawdust note - that this sachet is built around.

A wax sachet is a solid block of scented wax that releases fragrance passively at room temperature - no flame, no warmer, no socket and no refill. It works by saturating a small enclosed volume of still air, which is why it is excellent in a wardrobe, a drawer, a suitcase or a car and completely ineffective in an open living room. Two things decide whether one lasts: how much fragrance was put into the block, and whether the wax was cured long enough for the oil to bind properly. A sachet that smells overwhelming through its packaging and dies within a month was almost certainly shipped uncured. Expect around two months from a well-made one, and expect to be able to revive it once by scratching the surface.

It has faded. Can I revive it?

Is it safe around children and pets?
There's no flame, no heat and no electricity, which removes most of the risk that comes with candles and warmers. It is not edible.
