◆ Why A Wax Melt Out-Throws A Candle
This is the part most people don't know, and it's the whole reason melts exist. A candle's fragrance load is capped by its wick. Put too much oil in and the flame can't burn it cleanly - so most candles sit at six to eight percent, and that ceiling has nothing to do with how much scent you'd actually like. A warmer has no flame, so the wax can carry more: these are poured at ten percent. The trick: start with one cube, or half of one. At 10% in a closed room, oud is a scent you dose rather than pour.
A note on the comparison: 6-8% is typical of candles, not a universal rule - some are lower, a few are higher. The point isn't that candles are bad, it's that a wick imposes a limit a warmer doesn't. Actual throw also depends on your warmer, room size, ceiling height, and airflow.

◆ The Wood Behind The Scent
Agarwood isn't a wood you can simply cut. It is a wound. When an Aquilaria tree is injured and infected, it floods the damaged heartwood with a dark aromatic resin - and that resin is oud. India's heartland for it is Hojai in Assam, where agarwood has been processed and distilled for generations. That is the character this melt is built around.

Why We Made It
"Most oud you can buy for under ten dollars isn't oud-shaped at all. It's vanilla and patchouli with a puff of smoke over the top, because sweetness is cheap and people say yes to it on the first sniff. Real agarwood isn't like that. It's dry. It's a bit leathery, a bit medicinal at the edges, and it smells like an old wooden room rather than a dessert. We built this one that way and accepted that it will not be for everyone - and we put it in a melt rather than a candle because a flame pushes smoky resins towards acrid, while a warmer lets them open slowly. It also let us pour ten percent instead of eight."

Why Most Oud Wax Melts Disappoint
If your last oud melts smelled wonderful in the packet and like almost nothing in the warmer - or like burnt plastic in the first ten minutes - that isn't your warmer's fault. It comes down to four things, and three of them are decided before the wax is even poured.

The load is too low to work
Fragrance oil is the most expensive thing in a melt, so it's the first thing cut. A lot of supermarket melts sit at three to six percent - enough to smell in the packet, not enough to fill a room. Nobody prints the number, which tells you something.

It was never cured
Freshly poured wax hasn't bound to its fragrance yet. Ship it straight away and the oil sits loose in the block - big cold throw in the clamshell, disappointing hot throw in the warmer. Curing costs a producer time, so it's quietly skipped.

The oud has been sugared over
Agarwood is dry, resinous and slightly leathery, which is a harder sell on a shelf. So most versions bury it under vanilla and patchouli, or reach for a cheap smoke note that turns sharp on heat. What arrives is either a dessert or an ashtray, and rarely a wood.

Two cubes in a small room
The one mistake that's actually the user's, and the easiest to fix. A full-load oud is designed around one cube - sometimes half of one. Doubling it in a bedroom doesn't smell twice as good; it smells like something is burning, and you stop using it.

One Cube - Or Half
Snap off a single cube and put it in the warmer dish. At a 10% load, one is right for a living room, bedroom, study or hallway. In a small or closed room, break it in half. Two cubes are for open-plan spaces only - over-dosing is the fastest way to turn a good oud into a headache.

Electric Beats Tealight
Either works, but an electric warmer holds a steadier, lower temperature - which keeps smoky resins soft instead of sharp - and there's no open flame. If you use a tealight burner, treat it exactly like a candle: never unattended, never near anything that can catch.

Give It Ten Minutes
The cube softens, pools, and starts releasing within a few minutes - far faster than a candle. Switch it on ten minutes before guests arrive and the room is ready by the time they are.

Re-Melt Until It's Spent
Turn the warmer off and the wax sets again - it's ready for next time. Most cubes give two or three good sessions. The wax doesn't disappear; the fragrance does, so judge it by smell, not by looks.

Change It Out Cleanly

P.S. - Trust Your Guests, Not Your Nose
Noses adapt fastest to heavy resinous scents. Within an hour you'll stop registering an oud that visitors notice from the doorway. Before you add another cube, step out of the room for ten minutes and come back.

What makes a wax melt actually fill a room?
Fragrance load, curing, and wax choice - in that order. Load is the number almost nobody publishes: plenty of high-street melts sit somewhere between three and six percent, which is enough to smell in the clamshell and not much more. These are poured at ten percent, near the top of what soy will hold stably, which is possible precisely because a warmer has no wick and therefore no ceiling on how much oil the wax can carry. Curing matters nearly as much - wax needs time to bind with its fragrance, and skipping that rest is why some melts smell enormous in the packet and thin in the warmer. With a smoky wood there is a fourth factor: temperature. Resins turn sharp when they are pushed too hard, which is why the same fragrance often reads better in a warmer than in a candle.

What Does Oud Actually Smell Like?

This is built with a wood oud fragrance oil designed around the character of agarwood - the dry resin, the smoke, the leather, the sandalwood underneath. Distilled agarwood oil is one of the most expensive materials in perfumery, comes from trees regulated under CITES, and does not belong in an $8.22 clamshell. Anyone selling you distilled oud at this price is selling you something else and not telling you.
